Passed by the CELT General Meeting on June 9th, 2014

Passed by College Affairs Meeting, College of English and International Studies on June 11th, 2014

Passed by University Academic Affairs Meeting on July 8th, 2014

Rule 1. In order to enhance the learning effects of the required general English courses, the CELT is implementing the “English Language Proficiency Enhancement Program”, which consists of two parts: the English Competence Development Class and the Student Self-learning Plan.

Rule 2. The English Competence Development Class is applicable to the Day 4-Year College 1st-Year and 2nd-Year students whose CSEPT scores are below 200; this CSEPT score refers to the highest a student has scored during their time of study at Wenzao.

Rule 3. The English Competence Development Class is conducted on a weekly basis, with two extra hours incorporated into the general English course.

Rule 4. The Student Self-Learning Plan is applicable to all Day 4-Year College students taking the general English course. To promote a spirit of autonomy, this plan takes an encouraging approach where the teacher of each class informs the students of the plan and encourages them to voluntarily take part in it.

Rule 5. The Student Self-learning Plan Guidelines

  1. Participants should obtain a copy of the self-learning log from the CELT and register with the LDCC to use its self-learning software.
  2. Extra points are added to the student’s overall in-class quiz and participation grade for a certain number of hours studied using the self-learning software:

Hours Studied

Extra Points Earned

≥10

2

≥15

5

≥20

7

≥25

9

≥30

10

  1. Every time the student goes to the LDCC for self-learning, he/she needs to have the LDCC staff stamp the self-learning log for authentication.
  2. The maximum of the student’s overall in-class quiz and participation grade is 100 after the addition of the extra points from the plan.

Rule 6. The Implementation of the Student Self-learning Plan

  1. Implementation period is from the 3rd Week of each semester to the week before the final exam.
  2. Teachers of the general English courses should inform their students of the plan in the first 2 weeks of the semester and encourage them to take part. Teachers should remind their students of the plan once again in the week after the mid-term exam to advocate that the advantages of the plan are available to them throughout the semester.
  3. Those willing to take part in the plan go to the CELT to obtain a copy of the self-learning log.
  4. From the 3rd week of the semester on, students may bring their self-learning logs to the LDCC for diagnosis of their learning difficulties and receive recommendations of the self-learning software suitable for them and the suggested number of hours for practice. When students are finished with their self-learning, they need to have the LDCC staff stamp or sign their logs for the purpose of self-learning hour calculation.
  5. In the last 2 weeks of the semester, students hand in their self-learning logs to their teachers, who will use the logs as reference for the addition of points.
  6. All general English course teachers need to bring their students’ self-learning logs to CELT at the end of the semester for filing.
  7. If students lose their self-learning logs, they must acquire new ones from the CELT, and the accumulation of their self-learning hours starts from zero.
  8. A sample of the self-learning log is attached on the CELT website.

Rule 7. The above rules will take effect after approval by the CELT General Meeting and College Affairs Meeting, by the College of English and International Studies, after verification by the University Academic Affairs Meeting, and authorization by the University President; as will any revisions.
