Rules for the Implementation of “English Language Proficiency Enhancement Program”

at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages

Rule 1.  In order to enhance the learning effects of the required general English courses,

             the Center for English Language Teaching (CELT) is implementing the “English Language Proficiency

             Enhancement Program,” which consists of two parts: the remedial English classes and the self-study.

 

Rule 2. The English Language Proficiency Enhancement Program is applicable to

            the Day 4-Year College students whose CSEPT scores are below 200.

            This will base on the highest CSEPT score of a student during their time of study at Wenzao.

 

Rule 3. The English Language Proficiency Enhancement Program is conducted on a weekly basis,

           with two extra hours incorporated into the general English course.

 

Rule 4. The self-study is applicable to all Day 4-Year College students taking the general English classes.

            To promote a spirit of autonomy, the class teacher informs the students of the plan

            and encourages them to voluntarily take part in it.

 

Rule 5. The Self-study Plan Guidelines

           1.Students should go to the Language Diagnostic & Consulting Center (hereinafter as LDCC)

                to use the English learning resources:

                self-learning software, supplementary materials, mini-club, prescription courses, speaking practice,

                learning diagnosis, learning consultancy and learning lectures:

              

a. Students whose self-study hours have reached 10 hours can get additional 3 points

    of the overall in-class performance grade.

b. Students whose self-study hours have reached 15 hours can get additional 5 points

     of the overall in-class performance grade.

c. Students whose self-study hours have reached 20 hours can get additional 7 points

    of the overall in-class performance grade.

d. Students whose self-study hours have reached 25 hours can get additional 9 points

   of the overall in-class performance grade.

e. Students whose self-study hours have reached 30 hours (or more) can get additional 10 points

      of the overall in-class performance grade.

      

              2.The following self-learning activities can be included in the hours of Proficiency Enhancement Program

                 every time the student goes to the LDCC for self-study.

                 It is compulsory to obtain certificates

                 except for speaking practice, learning diagnosis, learning consultancy, and learning lectures.

 

      a. Self-learning software: Students may print out the hour record upon being accredited by advisors.

      b. Supplementary materials: Students may print out the hour record upon

         being accredited by advisors.

     c. Mini-club: Students may obtain the certificate and extra points upon completing a 16-hour course.

     d. Prescription courses: Students may obtain the certificate and extra points upon completing

         a 16-hour course.

     e. Speaking practice: Students only need to print out the hour record,

        and there’s no need for the certificate.

     f. Learning diagnosis: Students only need to print out the hour record,

         and there’s no need for the certificate.

     g. Learning consultancy: Students only need to print out the hour record,

         and there’s no need for the certificate.

     h. Learning lectures: Students only need to print out the hour record,

         and there’s no need for the certificate.

 

            3.The maximum of the student’s overall in-class performance grade is 100

               with all the additional points earned in this program.

 

Rule 6. The Implementation of the Student Self-study Plan

            1.Implementation period is from the 1st week of each semester to the week before the final exam.


            2.Teachers of the General English courses may inform their students of the plan in the first 2 weeks of the semester

               and encourage them to take part in the program.

               Teachers may remind their students of the plan once again in the weeks after the mid-term exam

               to advocate the program throughout the semester.


            3.From the 1st week of a semester on, students can log in to the Dr. E-learning

               platform to book the advisors for diagnosis of their learning difficulties and

               receive recognized self-study hours. When students finish their self-study,

              they need to keep all their LDCC hours in record for calculation

              of self-study hours by the end of a semester. Students whose CSEPT score is higher

              than 240 (and above) may make their own appointment of the software

              and speaking practice that are suitable for them.

 

            4.In the last 2 weeks of a semester, students need to submit their LDCC

               self-study hour record as well as the copy of course related certificates

               to their teachers, who will use the logs as reference for the addition of points.

 

Rule 7.  The above rules will take effect after approval

              by the CELT’s Curriculum Meeting and General Meeting

              as well as the College’s Affairs Meeting, with verification

              by the University’s Academic Affairs Meeting; as will any revisions.
